He was taken prisoner by the Germans in 1940. Later he was in General Philippe Leclerc's 2nd Armoured Division.〔 There are claims that on 5 May 1945, he was the first to arrive at Hitler's Berghof in the Obersalzberg and accepted the surrender of its guards.
